Part 1
- Have people close to you ever said that you drink too much or too often? Even one such comment counts — as long as it doesn't come from someone you consider hostile towards you.
- Have there been periods in your life when you considered the need to cut down on drinking? Try to recall what led up to those thoughts.
- Have you ever felt remorse, guilt, or shame because of your drinking, its consequences, or your behaviour after drinking? Recall the events that came before those feelings.
- Has one of the first things you did after waking up ever been having a drink (beer included) to "calm your nerves" or ease a hangover?
- Have you ever hidden alcohol from others or drunk in secret?
- Have you ever drunk more alcohol than you originally planned to?
This is a self-assessment tool created by Bohdan T. Woronowicz, MD, PhD. It doesn't replace a medical or psychological diagnosis — if you have any doubts about your drinking, talking to a specialist is the best next step.
